Most tank armholes are a byproduct of grading math, not a decision. Here's what an armhole actually has to do, the three ways it fails, and the geometry that fixes it.

There is an entire internet ritual built around a single garment failure. Search any forum where people talk about tanks and you'll find the same workflow repeated for years: buy a heavyweight tee, take scissors to the sleeves, accept the fraying, accept the flare, repeat next season. A whole community has quietly decided it's easier to cut a garment apart than to buy one that fits.

That ritual exists because of one measurement almost nobody talks about: the armhole. Pattern makers call it the armscye. It's the most consequential curve on a sleeveless garment, and on most tanks it isn't designed at all — it's whatever the grading software produced when the factory scaled a base pattern up and down.

This is what the armhole actually has to do, why it usually fails, and how we approach it at Scared But Alive.

The straight answer up front. An armhole is clearance for the most mobile joint in the human body. Three variables decide whether it works: depth [how far it drops below the armpit], angle [how it's shaped through the shoulder point], and edge tension [whether the opening holds its shape or bags out]. Get those right and a tank moves with you. Get them wrong and no amount of sizing up fixes it.

What an armhole actually has to do

The shoulder is the most mobile joint you own. Raising your arm overhead isn't one movement — the upper arm rotates, the shoulder blade slides and tilts across your back, and the collarbone lifts. Orthopedic researchers who measured what ordinary daily tasks demand put numbers on it: reaching overhead in daily life uses about 121 degrees of shoulder flexion and 128 degrees of abduction. A sleeveless garment has to allow all of that while staying put on your torso.

That's the core engineering problem: the opening has to be big enough to clear a moving joint and controlled enough that the rest of the garment doesn't move with it. Every tank you've ever worn sits somewhere on that trade-off, whether the brand thought about it or not.

The three ways an armhole fails

The first failure is the one that created the scissors ritual. The industry answer to "make it fit more people" has always been make the hole bigger — because a deep armhole never binds, and a garment that never binds never gets returned for fit. What it does instead is hang wrong on everyone equally.

The counterintuitive rule: a higher armhole gives you more freedom

This is the part that surprises people, because it reads backwards. Pattern drafting has known it for a century: a deep armhole restricts movement, and a higher, well-shaped one frees it. The mechanism: when the opening drops far below your armpit, the body of the garment is effectively attached to your arm. Raise your arm and the whole side seam comes with it — hem up, fabric bunching, the garment reorganizing itself every time you move. A higher armhole decouples the garment from the arm. The arm moves through the opening; the tank stays where you put it.

Depth ties the garment to your arm. Height frees it. That's the entire fix.

High doesn't mean tight. It means the curve sits close to the joint's actual pivot instead of ten centimetres below it, shaped so nothing binds at the front shoulder. That shaping is exactly the work the grading software doesn't do.

Why sizing up makes it worse, not better

When a tank fits your shoulders but not your chest, or your chest but not your waist, the standard advice is "size up." Here's why that keeps failing: grading scales the whole pattern at once. Go up a size for the shoulders and the chest grows, the waist grows, the armhole gets deeper, and the neckline widens — all together, in fixed ratios decided by the base pattern.

If your proportions don't match those ratios — broader through the shoulder, narrower through the waist, more room needed in one place and less in another — there is no position on the size run where the garment agrees with you. You're not between sizes. The pattern was drafted for a body distribution that isn't yours.

The fix isn't a bigger hole or a bigger size. It's a base pattern drafted around the proportions the garment will actually be worn by, and fit-tested on real bodies across builds — which is slower and more expensive than grading one block, and is exactly the corner most brands cut.

The edge is a component, not a cut

Look at a tank that still sits right after a year of wear and washing, and then at a DIY cut-off. The difference is the edge. A finished armhole edge — bound, ribbed, or taped — is engineered to do two jobs: stretch enough to let the joint move, and recover fully so the curve returns to its drafted shape.

A raw cut edge does neither. Knit fabric at a cut edge has nothing holding its geometry, so the curve grows a little with every wear, curls at the raw line, and flares away from the body. That's why the thrift-flip never quite sits flat, no matter how carefully it was cut. The edge isn't a line; it's a part, with its own material and its own tension spec.

Fabric decides whether the fit survives

The best-drafted armhole in the world fails in a fabric with no recovery. Two things matter most on a sleeveless garment:
