The men's section was supposed to be the answer. Then the shoulders fit and the shirt reached mid-thigh. The pattern geometry of who menswear is actually drafted for — computed from 6,068 measured bodies — and what an honest block has to do differently.

"Excuse me, the men's section is downstairs." A real sentence, said by a real employee to a real shopper who posted about it afterward — and everyone reading who has made that walk knows the whole choreography: the glance from the register, the pretending to browse for a gift, the year it took before someone in a forum thread gave the advice that became the best sentence we've ever borrowed: just do it while scared.

So you did it while scared. And then the plot twist nobody warns you about: the men's section doesn't fit either. The thread titles say it plainly — "hate how nothing in the mens section ever perfectly fits" — with the diagnosis right underneath: "no matter how perfectly it fits my arms and shoulders the length always reaches down my thigh." This file explains exactly why, with pattern geometry and 6,068 measured bodies, because the answer is not your body. The answer is a block drafted for a person who barely exists.

The straight answer up front. A men's shirt reads ONE number — the chest — and guesses everything else from one reference body. In the public ANSUR II anthropometric data, bodies sharing the same chest band [roughly a men's medium] differ at the median by ~4 cm of waist, ~8 cm of hip, ~4 cm of shoulder width, and ~11 cm of height between the female and male samples. The men's block also carries no darts — its shaping is straight seams plus looseness — and the industry grades toward a "drop 6" taper more V-shaped than even the median man. The shirt isn't judging you. It's just answering a question about somebody else.

The block has no curves, on purpose

Start with what a men's shirt actually is, structurally. The base pattern a whole clothing line gets cut from is called the block — and a standard published men's shirt block runs nineteen steps and contains zero darts — the draft's own framing: it "will not be as form-fitting as the women's bodice block," because men's styles run loose. The shaping strategy is arithmetic looseness: body width is drafted at half the chest plus 8 cm — roughly 16 cm of total ease — with the armhole dropped a fixed distance and the shoulder slope drawn as a small vertical offset. Compare the counterpart technology: a fitted bodice block comes with an entire alteration syllabus of darts — the mechanism a pattern uses to change circumference between chest, waist, and hip. Menswear skips the mechanism because its reference body barely changes circumference. Straight lines for a straight torso.

Now put a body with actual geometry inside it. Shoulder slope is a drafted angle with a diagnosable failure mode — squarer shoulders than the pattern jut at the neckline with drag lines toward the sleeve; more slope pools folds at the shoulder's end. Hips are a side-seam problem: in the measured data below, half the population carries double the hip spring [hip minus waist — the curve a side seam has to travel] that the straight seam was drawn for, so the hem catches and rides instead of falling past. And length hangs off a reference height that — as one drafting veteran of forty years admits of the formulas generally — was always an approximation of one body. Which brings us to the receipts.

Same chest, different body: the four-way miss

ANSUR II is a public body-measurement dataset — 6,068 measured bodies [4,082 male, 1,986 female], 93 measurements each, collected by the US Army and released for anyone to check. We computed the comparison that explains your fitting room [our arithmetic, on the raw public data]: take every body in the 96–104 cm chest band — roughly a men's medium. The male bodies in that band run, at the median: waist 87 cm, hip 98, shoulders 41, height 175. The female bodies in the SAME chest band: waist +3.8 cm, hip +7.6 cm, shoulders −4.2 cm, height −11 cm. One size tag. Four simultaneous misses. The shirt fit your chest and answered a different body's other questions — which is why sizing up for shoulders makes a tent ["Men section look like a tent even if materials are better" — a real thread, verbatim] and sizing down for the waist strangles the lats.

Drop 6 and the 6'2" hologram

It gets stranger: the reference body isn't even the median man. Off-the-rack menswear is sized around "drop 6" — a size 38 jacket paired with a size 32 waist, a built-in ~15 cm V-taper the trade itself describes as producing "the standard suit shape." The median male BODY in the ANSUR data tapers about 12 cm chest-to-waist; the median female body about 9. Garments carry ease, so this is the shape the system aims at rather than a 1:1 measurement — but the aim is the point: the standard is more V-shaped than nearly everyone it dresses. Peer-reviewed fit research says the quiet part in journal prose: standard sizing assumes "a standard body shape" proportionally graded, and "one fit model of a single body type cannot represent all people in the target market." The same study documents the cost: when clothes fail, the "wearer blames their body." Read that twice, then never do it again.

And the length problem has a face: the fit model. "Every model is 6'1 or taller. And I'm 5'4, will men's shirts fit me" — the community bank's exact question. In the measured male distribution, 6'1"–6'2" sits at roughly the 95th percentile — taller than about 19 of every 20 men the clothes are nominally for — yet the industry scales its lengths off him as the near-universal convention. Hence sleeves past knuckles, hems at mid-thigh, the 5'1" shopper's verbatim ledger — "too narrow in the thigh/hips, too wide in the waist, and too long... outrageously long in the torso" — and one industry veteran's confession from a menswear comment section that deserves preservation: "Fit models — both male and female, are aliens."

"Unisex" is usually one body wearing two labels

The industry's own definition gives the game away: unisex sizing "offers a universal fit... by merging traditional men's and women's measurements." But you cannot average a 41 cm shoulder with a 37, an 8 cm hip spring with a 16, a 175 cm frame with a 164, and produce a garment that fits either — a merged median is just a new stranger. In practice most unisex lines run the men's block with the label changed, which is precisely the failure the sizing literature predicts. Honest multi-body drafting is a list of specific engineering decisions: the shoulder handled as slope AND length, the armhole depth chosen deliberately, the side seam given real spring, hem lengths that don't assume the hologram, and — since knits mostly can't use darts — shaping done through the block itself, then fit-tested on actual different builds and re-cut until it works. Why don't men's shirts fit me even when the chest is right?

Because the shirt reads one number and guesses four more. In the public ANSUR II anthropometric dataset, bodies sharing the same chest band — roughly a men's medium — differ at the median by about 4 centimeters of waist, 8 of hip, 4 of shoulder width, and 11 of height between the male and female samples. A men's block drafts all of those from the male medians, so a garment can match your chest perfectly and still be wrong in four directions at once.

What is a "drop" in menswear sizing?

The difference between the garment's chest size and its waist — ready-to-wear menswear is conventionally sized around a drop 6, meaning a size 38 jacket pairs with a size 32 waist. Is unisex sizing just men's sizing?

Usually, in practice. Industry guides describe unisex as merging men's and women's measurements, but most unisex lines run one block that leans on men's proportions. Peer-reviewed sizing research is blunt about why that fails: one fit model of a single body type cannot represent all people in a target market. An honest multi-body block has to actually adjust shoulder slope and length, armhole depth, side-seam curve, and torso length — not just relabel the size chart.

How should a shirt actually fit?

Shoulder seam at the shoulder point or deliberately dropped by design, no drag lines pointing at the neck or the sleeve, a hem that sits level without the front lifting, side seams falling straight rather than bowing, and enough room through the hip that the fabric falls past it instead of catching. When a shirt fails those checks, the failure is drafted in — fit research shows wearers blame their bodies for it, and the geometry says they shouldn't.
