Shoulders that need a Large, a waist that needs a Medium, a chest that says Small. The body isn't the problem — the industry's grading math is, and this file shows exactly where it breaks.
The complaint is so common it has a standard phrasing. From one training forum: "If I buy a large, the length is right, but the waist is too big. If I buy a medium, the waist fits, but the length is too short." From another: "it's hard to find clothes that fit right if you're muscular and have a small waist." From an athletic-build clothing thread: "my jeans are a 12 but my black coat is an XL because there is no way to get my arms into a mere large."
Three sizes, one body. The instinct is to read this as a body problem — too broad, too built, too much. It's not. It's an industrial-process problem with a specific name: pattern grading. Once you see how a size run is actually made, the whole experience stops being personal.
The straight answer up front. Every size of a garment is one base pattern, drafted on one fit model, scaled up and down by fixed increments. As the industry's own reference states: "grading will not create shape, but will only increase or decrease size of the original shape." If your proportions differ from that one base body, no size on the rack is your size — you're only choosing which part of you it fits.

How a size run is actually made
A brand doesn't design an S, an M, an L. It designs one garment, on one body — a hired fit model whose measurements literally become the brand's size chart. That base pattern gets "graded": every point of measurement is moved outward or inward by a fixed increment per size. Chest typically moves 1 to 2 inches per size; the shoulder point moves a smaller amount; some points barely move at all.
Two consequences follow from the mechanics. First, grading changes size, never shape — every size is the same body photocopied at a different zoom level. Second, the further a size sits from the base, the worse it fits ANYONE — industry guides warn plainly that "patterns tend to warp if you go from size S to 3XL." One body is cheaper than a size run of bodies. That's the entire reason. It's a cost decision wearing a fit costume.
The three-size body is the majority, not the exception
Here's the number that reframes everything. When TC2 ran SizeUSA — a 3D body-scanning survey of more than 10,000 Americans, 200+ measurement points each — the result was that only 10 to 20 percent of the population fit the existing sizing standards, standards traceable to measurement data from before World War II. Peer-reviewed analysis of the same dataset shows body proportions vary systematically — chest, waist, and hip do not scale together across real people.
So the "weird body" that needs three sizes is, statistically, the normal one. Standard sizing is the anomaly. And the label makes it worse: a study measuring 1,258 garments across 54 retailers found the same size number measures differently by price tier and target customer, with no regulation anywhere in the chain. "Knowing your size" is not a transferable fact between brands. It never was.
Why sizing up buys a bigger copy of the wrong shape
Now run the standard advice through the machine. You size up for your shoulders. The grade rule moves every measurement at once — you wanted one inch at the shoulder, and the L also hands you roughly two extra inches of waist, a longer body, a wider chest, a deeper armhole [see File 01 for what that does]. The forum language for the result is exact: "the majority of shirts nowadays make me look like I'm wearing a dress."
Tailoring can rescue some of it — a waist takes in about 2 to 3 inches, maximum — but shoulders effectively cannot be altered, which is why "buy for the shoulders, alter the rest" is the universal workaround. Notice what that workaround is: a tax you pay, in money and errands, for a garment drafted on somebody else's proportions.

Tailoring admitted this a century ago [the drop system]
Suiting has always known chest and waist are independent variables — it just priced the knowledge into a system called the drop: jacket chest minus trouser waist. Ready-to-wear standard is drop 6 [a 40-inch chest ships with a 34-inch trouser]. Athletic tapers run drop 7 to 8; a very built, narrow-waisted body is a drop 10 — a full four sizes of difference between two people who both "wear a 40."
Streetwear mostly pretends the drop doesn't exist and sells everyone the same box. That's the quiet reason a body that lifts falls off the edge of most brands' size runs: the run was never drafted with that chest-to-waist relationship in its geometry.
What pattern-first means at Scared But Alive
The fix isn't a bigger size chart. It's a different starting point. Our development order runs pattern before photography: the base pattern is drafted around the proportions our garments are actually worn by — more room through the shoulder and back, structure that doesn't demand a drop-6 body — then fit-tested on real bodies across different builds before a run is cut. Armhole angle, collar hold, hem behavior are decisions, not grading outputs [File 01 covers the armhole in full].
